MENTAL HEALTH STUDENT SERVICES ACT (MHSSA)
The Mental Health Services Oversight and Accountability Commission (MHSOAC) awarded the County of Mendocino Behavioral Health and Recovery Services an MHSSA grant in September 2020.
MHSSA funds are used to better bolster and expand existing services to Mendocino County students and their families. This includes linking and strengthening existing mental health services to better meet student's mental health needs and enhance awareness, prevention, and early intervention.
Vision: For all students to have access to the necessary services and supports to become healthy, resilient adults and for schools to provide the nurturing, trauma informed environments that support behavioral health and education outcomes.
Goals: Reduce dropout rates, suspensions and expulsions, and increase suicide prevention awareness and reduce suicide risks by augmenting therapeutic and support services to school sites.
The MHSSA Mendocino County Student Services Partnership is led by Mendocino County Behavioral Health and includes the Mendocino County Office of Education, behavioral health service providers, and school districts. The partnership delivers an array of services to students and their families through therapists, counselors, and other case managers working on-site at schools and through services offered in the community by established behavioral health providers, including the Mendocino County Youth Project, Redwood Community Services, and Tapestry Family Services.
Service providers support the goals, mission, and vision of the partnership through:
- Outreach and engagement to students and families to link them to services
- Screening for mental health concerns and assessing student needs and strengths
- Brief treatment, intervention, and crisis intervention
- Providing group mental health services to students
- Provide targeted professional learning and capacity building for school based mental health professionals and staff
The Mendocino County Student Services Partnership Steering Committee is responsible for ensuring the MHSSA programs have a viable and sustainable strategy and achieve their intended educational impact and outcomes.
The MHSSA Student Services Partnership Steering Committee meetings are held monthly at 1:30 pm, and Stakeholder Forums are held quarterly from 4:00 - 6:00 pm. See below for upcoming meeting dates and video conferencing login details.
