Point Arena has a Fire Safe Council. The group will meet monthly in Coast's Community Room. Each month, they will cover different topics to help the community be more fire safe including creating a go-bag, evacuation routes, hardening your home, and more.
September's focus:
How do we communicate with each other and the outside world when cell service is down and we've lost internet connectivity? GMRS!
- We will have a presentation by Dave Horvitz and Richard Mogford on the General Mobile Radio Service, or GMRS, a personal two-way radio service created by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the United States. Transmitting on GMRS frequencies requires a license from the FCC, however no knowledge test is required to obtain a license. A license covers you and your immediate family members (i.e. spouse, children, parents, grandparents, grandchildren, aunts, uncles, and in-laws) and is valid for 10 years.
