Organic waste is defined as: food waste, green waste, landscape and pruning waste, nonhazardous wood waste, and food-soiled paper/cardboard. If No – Since April 1, 2016, businesses, including multi-family residential complexes of five (5) units or more, have been required by state law (AB 1826) to source separate and recycle organic waste based on the amount of solid waste they generate. The current threshold is two (2) cubic yards or more total solid waste, including trash, recyclables, and organic waste. If you need assistance in complying with this law, please contact the County of Mendocino Solid Waste Division at (707) 463-4363 within 30 days to request more information. Our goal is 100% compliance and we are here to provide information and guidance.
Certain exemptions from AB 1826 requirements are allowed by law. If you don’t already have organic waste recycling in place, please see the Exemption Request Form to see if your business may qualify for an exemption.
